Dorset Birding and Wildlife Experience - What We Offer

The Dorset Birding and Wildlife Experience: what we offer

Dorset's habitats are varied including lowland heath, woodlands, rivers, reed beds, chalk grassland, harbours and sea cliffs. Many of these habitats are set in stunning rural landscapes, others are on the edge of, or even in, urban conurbations - but all attract an interesting variety of species.

Dorset's bird life is amongst the best in the UK with just over 420 species recorded in the county. Most of the birding hot spots are located by the coast but interesting birds are found throughout the county. Some of the UK's finest dragonfly and butterfly watching is to be had in Purbeck and on the north Dorset chalk grasslands respectively, all six species of the UK's reptiles are found on Dorset's internationally important heathlands while, in botanical terms, the richest 10km grid square in the UK is found in the Wareham area.

Why not...

> Track down spring/autumn migrant birds in south Dorset, visiting Portland, Weymouth & The Fleet
> Watch Woodlarks, Dartford Warblers & Nightjars on the Dorset heathlands
> Experience the spectacle of Poole Harbour's wintering waders & wildfowl

> Spend a winter's day birding in Purbeck aiming to see 100 species during the day

> Search for dragonflies & reptiles on the Purbeck heathlands

> Visit the north Dorset chalk grasslands and woodlands to look for a variety of butterflies
> Go for a scenic walk along part of the stunning Dorset coast to see what we can find     ...and much more

Dorset Birdwatching Breaks

In addition to booking a guide through our Tailor-made Birding and Wildlife Tours, we can also offer Dorset Birdwatching Breaks. The Dorset Birding and Wildlife Experience has joined forces with LakeViews Bed & Breakfast (website), run by Jenni Gormill, to offer a combination of quality accommodation and a guide to provide an unforgettable experience of Dorset’s birdlife... alternatively you may wish to arrange your accommodation elsewhere in the area.

LakeViews is located on the outskirts of the Old Saxon town of Wareham, a short 15-minute walk from the town centre. The town is well served by road and rail links (situated on the main London Waterloo to Weymouth line). The property has undergone extensive renovations to the highest standard and offers B&B to individuals, couples and to small groups (max. six). The accommodation consists of two double bedrooms/one twin bedroom, all with en-suite facilities.
LakeViews overlooks Swineham Gravel Pits, one of the few freshwater bodies in the Poole Harbour area, and is close to Swineham Point where the two Wareham Rivers – the Frome and Piddle – flow into the harbour. In winter the pits attract a good variety of waterfowl with occasionally something more unusual - Bittern, Ring-necked Duck and Smew have all been seen here. Bearded Tit breed on Swineham Point, Cetti’s Warbler is resident and Marsh Harrier may be seen at any time of the year.

We offer a flexible approach to tailor your own Dorset Birdwatching Break with an itinerary to suit your particular interests at any time of the year. The price quoted for your package will depend on your party size, the number of nights B&B and the number of days guiding you require... please contact us to discuss what you are looking for.

Birding & Wildlife Walks

Not quite sure what you would like to do? Here are some suggestions... they will give you an idea of what could be included on your own Tailor-made Birding and Wildlife Tour, or as part of your Dorset Birdwatching Break package. Most of these walks would also be suitable for our Guiding for Groups service. Depending on the walk, a full day lasts around 6-8 hours, a half day around 3-4 hours. In some cases, two half days could be combined to make a full day.
